Regenerative Economics: Reinventing Businesses for Sustainability | Graham Boyd | A Thrivable Future: Episode 20

Regenerative Economics: Reinventing Businesses for Sustainability | Graham Boyd | A Thrivable Future: Episode 20

The business world is largely driven by chasing financial growth. People tend to act, assuming that averages will be consistent and apply to everyone. But in reality, this rarely happens. As a result, businesses often find themselves needing to take more resources and push their workers harder. Is there a better way? Graham Boyd is an author, speaker, and consultant who uses the expertise gathered across three careers (including a particle physicist, manager with Procter and Gamble, and serial startup founder) to help businesses reinvent themselves to help solve the challenges facing our world – in particular, how can we address the impending climate crisis? And could multinational businesses contribute to the solution? We talk about the regenerative economy, a new way of thinking about businesses and their role in economies. It proposes that businesses are living parts of an ecosystem, and that they should work together to build a regenerative global economy that focuses on restoring our ecosystems and regenerating our planet - making a thrivable world for all. We also highlight how considering capital outside of financial capital (including human and natural capital, not just financial capital) can guide better business decisions, and how the idea that average outcomes apply to all individuals can lead businesses astray. By reinventing how businesses operate, we can potentially make a thrivable future where humanity can thrive with nature (and each other). (42 mins). --- If you are interested in learning more about the topics we've discussed here, Graham Boyd has published several books on these. Can Democracies Achieve Climate Action? | Dr. Ron Levy | A Thrivable Future: Episode 19

Can Democracies Achieve Climate Action? | Dr. Ron Levy | A Thrivable Future: Episode 19

Democracies empower people to influence the future of their nations - but if we want our governments to create a thrivable future, we need correct and timely information. But how can we achieve this?
We discuss with Dr. Ron Levy, Associate Professor at the Australian National University. As a researcher who explores the intersection between public law and political theory - especially deliberative democratic theory, he has won several academic awards and has published numerous works on law and political theory in books and journals in at least five countries.
Today, we discuss how democratic institutions in both Australia and across the world can both ensure peace and benefit our climate, the role that national constitutions can play in change, and the obstacles that nations have to making changes for a world where we live in harmony with nature (and each other). People and governments can lead the world to a thrivable future. (44 mins)

Making Our Voices Heard: Sustainability Through Connections? | Featuring Caroline Pidcock | A Thrivable Future: Episode 18

Making Our Voices Heard: Sustainability Through Connections? | Featuring Caroline Pidcock | A Thrivable Future: Episode 18

Architecture makes up a significant part of our lives - but many of our towns and cities fail to consider people’s needs. There is a need to adapt the spaces where we live and work, and how we act within them. But how? And how can we make sure the needs of both people and ecosystems are met?

We welcome Caroline Pidcock, an Australian architect and sustainable development advocate. With over 30 years of experience working in architecture, biophilia and regenerative design, she seeks to inspire us to create buildings and communities that consider the diverse needs of everyone - not just a few.

In this episode, we discuss how architecture and adaptation can help us achieve net zero emissions, how regenerative design can improve our lives, and the connections between feminism and sustainable design. Through understanding, we can build a thrivable future. (35 mins)

From Anxiety to Action: How Can We Make Change Happen? | With Dr. Renée Lertzman | Episode 16

From natural disasters to climate change, our world is struggling. Solutions are in reach - but they can be difficult to embrace.
Fears and anxieties can turn to denial, or even resistance to sustainable change.  But what if we could reach out to them?

We welcome Dr. Renée Lertzman, a psychologist and engagement strategist dedicated to accelerating global system change on a broad scale - through helping people turn their fears and anxieties on our world into productive and sustainable action. She is the creator of Project Inside Out, a website that can help those who seek to make change engage others through understanding one another. Today we discuss how people act when it comes to sustainability, how skeptics emerge, and how we can communicate on sustainability with people - not at them. If we can understand and listen to each other, even when it is difficult, we can make a hopeful future where our world thrives. (31 mins)

Changing the System: Can we Make a Peaceful World? | Featuring Anneloes Smitsman | A Thrivable Future: Episode 14

Our world is made up of interconnected systems. But many of these systems are designed around maximising growth at the expense of others - which is unsustainable. What can we do to change this?

Dr. Anneloes Smitsman is an expert in achieving societal transformations and systemic barriers to change. Her Ph.D. dissertation ‘Into the Heart of Systems Change’ is part of a systemic worldwide effort to transform economics, education, politics, and governance through her proposed Transition Plan for a Thrivable Civilization.

We talk about Sustainable Development Goal 16 - around peace, justice and the institutions - from local councils to global organisations - that ensure a safe and thriving world for all.

We also highlight the issues of corruption, the effects of laws and policies on societies, and how we can all improve the systems that govern us. Through systemic change, we can potentially make a thrivable future where we all live in harmony with each other. (36 mins)

We speak to Dr. Rebecca English, a researcher and teacher at Queensland University of Technology in Australia. She specialises in parenting and education, especially alternative education methods. Having spent several years teaching children, she has used this experience to explore how parenting practices influence the decisions they make for their children.

How Can We Quit Plastic? | Featuring Clara Williams Roldan | Co-author of ‘Quitting Plastic’ | A Thrivable Future: Episode 9

Did you know that the average plastic bag is used for just 7 minutes before they're thrown out? They often end up in our waterways and our forests… hurting the creatures that live within them. By 2050, we are likely to have more plastic than fish in our oceans.

We know there’s a need to reduce plastic waste, but how?

Today we speak with Clara Williams Roldan, who wrote the book ‘Quitting Plastic’ with her mother, Louise Williams.

Currently working as an Impact & Education Director at Documentary Australia, and having previously worked as a policy and legislation advisor in the New South Wales Parliament, she knows first-hand the power of storytelling to drive meaningful action and change.

In this episode, we explore how plastic harms our environments, the difficulties of reducing plastic waste, and how we can motivate sustainable consumption and production.

Together, we can help our world thrive!

More Than Trees? Creating Spaces for Our Wildlife | Featuring Joanne Wasdin | Naturalist at Bear Creek Nature Centre, Georgia, USA | A Thrivable Future: Episode 8

Loss of biodiversity is one of the biggest threats to our planet. However, many of the ways we try to help the environment actually harm it. How can we make sure that we create ecosystems that our native wildlife actually wants to live in?

In this episode, we talk to Joanne Wasdin, a naturalist from the Bear Creek Nature reserve in Georgia, USA. Having been introduced to the world of wildlife as an adult through conservation education, she has worked both as a scientist and science teacher to bridge the gap between the two.

From art and media, to mosses and mammal research, she hopes to show everyone about how amazing our native wildlife is.

Today we explore what it’s like to work as a naturalist, the threats to our natural environments - and how we can truly help them thrive!

In this episode, we talk with Dr. Jennifer Luke, a Research Fellow (Wellbeing & Employability) at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) about Sustainable Development Goal 8 – focusing on decent work for all.
